About the Training
This training is presented by two Aboriginal Elders and goes for 3.5 hours.
Understanding Aboriginal Culture and the Impact of Colonisation
Build your understanding of culture and the impacts of colonisation.
We yarn about traditional lifestyles of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as well as introducing key understanding about modern Aboriginal culture and the impact of colonisation.
The session explores: traditional lifestyles; kinship; ceremony; the Dreaming; missions, reserves and restrictions placed on Aboriginal people; racism and discrimination; Stolen Generation; loss of culture; and trauma.
Getting Up, Standing Up and Showing Up - The Road to Change
First Nations people have a long history of standing up and fighting for rights. We explore some of the key movements that have been led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to bring about change and how we can all work to continue driving change.
We yarn about key drivers of change including the Yirrkala Bark Petition; the NSW Freedom Ride; the 1967 Referendum; and the establishment of the Tent Embassy.
We also discuss a range of government led initiatives including the Bringing them Home Report; The Apology and the Close the Gap initiative.
